The 27-nation European Union agreed in March that renewable sources should make up 20 percent of the energy mix by 2020, up from the current seven percent, to curb emissions of greenhouse gases.
The association (Syndicat des Energies Renouvelables) said it is possible for wind power capacity to reach 25,000 megawatts by 2020, up from 2,000 MW currently.
This surge in wind power capacity would be equivalent to building more than 25 nuclear reactors of 900 megawatts (MW) each in less than 13 years.
"Our target is perfectly feasible," Andre Antolini, the head of the association, said at a news conference. "France comes just after the UK in terms of wind power potential," he said.
France has lagged other EU member states such as Spain and Germany largely due to its nuclear capacity, which makes up 80 percent of French electricity needs.
